Champions League Final team news - Giorgio Chiellini denied Luis Suarez reunion by injury

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has been denied a Champions League Final reunion on the pitch with Luis Suarez, the man who bit him at last summer’s World Cup.

Chiellini and his clubmate Patrice Evra were both looking forward to renewing rivalry with Barcelona forward Suarez, the Uruguayan having incurred lengthy bans for biting and racially abusing that duo respectively.

But the 30-year-old Italian has been ruled out of the Berlin showdown due to a calf injury he sustained in training on Wednesday.

A statement on the official Juventus website read:
“Giorgio Chiellini did not take part in training (on Thursday) following the calf discomfort during Wednesday's session.
“The tests showed a lesion of the soleus muscle of his left leg, so the defender will not be available for the match against Barcelona.”

But Evra will still come face to face with Suarez again and while the former Manchester United left-back believes the reunion has been overstated somewhat, he is determined to ensure the former Liverpool attacker knows he has been in a game.

Evra said:
“I am proud to be what I am, I am proud about my colour and I will shake his hand, it is no problem. But I will make sure he feels my presence on the pitch.”

For Barcelona, Xavi is set to end his 17-year association with the club in this game as the 35-year-old midfielder, capped 133 times by Spain, is moving to Qatar at the end of the season to join Al Sadd on a three-year contract.

Generally a substitute these days, Xavi is likely to be given a cameo farewell appearance by coach Luis Enrique but it would be a major surprise if he displaced either of Ivan Rakitic or Sergio Busquets in the starting line-up.

Xavi used to be a fixture alongside Busquets in the Barca engine room but Rakitic, signed from Sevilla last summer, has established himself as his long-term replacement.

All eyes will also be on Barcelona’s frightening front three of Lionel Messi, Suarez and Neymar, who provide the biggest possible challenge for a Juventus defence which is among the very best in Europe.

If the Italian champions are to have any chance of lifting the trophy in Berlin on Saturday, they will need to keep the threat from that trio to a minimum – either that or score lots of goals themselves!
