Barcelona v Celtic tips and betting advice - Will Scots cave in at Camp Nou?

Celtic face Barcelona for the third consecutive time they have contested the Champions League group phase and begin what looks an extremely tough campaign at Camp Nou on Tuesday.

Our best bet for this match: Barcelona to win and under 3.5 goals in the match as a combined bet at 6/4 with BetStars

The Scottish champions did not reach this stage of Europe’s elite club competition in either of the two previous seasons, but in the autumns of 2012 and 2013 they took on the Catalan superstars and also back in 2004.

Indeed, there is plenty of history between these famous clubs and Barcelona knocked Celtic out of the Champions League in the round of 16 in 2007-08, whereas the Hoops enjoyed a 1-0 aggregate success in the 2003-04 UEFA Cup.

But it’s the more recent meetings that matter in terms of being a guide to what will happen this term and while both clubs enjoyed a 2-1 home win in 2012, a 6-1 defeat in Spain the following season perhaps provides the most vivid memory for a few Celtic players who could face Barca again.

Neymar scored a hat-trick that night and another heavy loss for the visitors must be the fear as they go into a pool which also contains Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach, with Celtic available at odds of 16/1 with Ladbrokes to qualify for the last 16 and 3/1 at Sky Bet to extend their campaign into the Europa League by finishing third.

Manager Brendan Rodgers’ previous Champions League group-stage participation came with Liverpool two seasons ago and frankly he made a mess of it, with some bizarre selection decisions as the Reds were pipped to second spot in their pool by Basel.

The obvious worry for Celtic as they embark upon some very difficult away fixtures is that their European form on the road has been shocking for some time now, with their only wins in the last 24 attempts coming in Iceland (twice) and Northern Ireland.

They were also hanging on at the end of a 2-0 defeat away to Hapoel Be’er Sheva last time out, grateful for having claimed a 5-2 advantage from the home leg.

It really is very difficult to see Celtic making much impact at Camp Nou and it’s doubtful that they will score a goal. A 2-0 or 3-0 success for Barcelona looks highly likely - and that thinking has influenced our main bet.

Recommended bets:

Barcelona to win and under 3.5 goals in the match @ 6/4 with BetStars
Barcelona to score in the first 15 minutes @ 7/4 with William Hill
