Basel v Schalke 04 betting tips - Salah can keep Swiss roll going

Mohamed Salah looks a big price at 12/1 to score the first goal when Basel and Schalke meet in Champions League Group E on Tuesday.

Best match odds
Basel – 17/10 (William Hill)
Draw – 12/5 (BetVictor)
Schalke – 15/8 (Bet365)

Both these teams are aiming to preserve their 100% records – and that’s a stat you would never have believed possible before Basel kicked off their opening game away to Chelsea or even at half time in that match.

The Swiss club achieved something only Barcelona had ever done previously when they beat a Chelsea side managed by Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.

And that was the last outcome by some distance that looked likely at the interval when the hosts led through an Oscar goal, only for Salah and Marco Streller to spark a stunning turnaround with the equaliser and winner respectively.

That result provided further evidence of Basel’s growing reputation in Europe which first started to have lift-off when they knocked Manchester United out of this competition two seasons ago.

Last term they reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, ironically losing to Chelsea, and their coach Murat Yakin will increasingly find his name appearing in next manager markets until he lands a more high-profile role – the bookies were quick to price him up for the Sunderland job when Paolo di Canio was sacked.

Inevitably, the Basel players will also be in demand and few more so than Salah, who is a 21-year-old Egyptian winger voted Africa’s Most Promising Talent in 2012 (which was nothing to do with Simon Cowell, as far as we know).

Salah has scored six goals since the Swiss season began in July and already has four to his credit in the Champions League – two against Bulgarian club Ludogorets Razgrad and one against Maccabi Tel Aviv as well as the Stamford Bridge leveller.

That is an excellent return already and BetVictor, as competitive as ever in most football markets, go 12/1 that he nets the opener against Schalke, which is tremendous value when you consider one firm offer just 11/2!

As for Schalke, they began with a 3-0 dismissal of Steaua Bucharest and their form in the Bundesliga, apart from a 4-0 drubbing against Bayern Munich, has picked up nicely since they made a poor start in their first three games.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar remains sidelined with a knee injury and in his absence, Salah is the man who can shine for Basel.

Recommendation: Mohamed Salah first goalscorer (12/1, BetVictor)
