Celtic FC v Hapoel Be'er Sheva tips and betting advice - Hoops hope to end Champions League group-stage hurt

Celtic aim to end nearly three years of Champions League disappointment by getting the better of Israeli club Hapoel Be’er Sheva in this season’s play-off round, the first leg of the tie taking place on Wednesday.

Our best bet for this match: Hapoel Be’er Sheva/Draw double chance at 4/3 with Unibet

In both of the last two seasons, Celtic have fallen at this final hurdle before the group stage, 12 months ago to Malmo and before that against Maribor, and even their 2013-14 campaign ended painfully with three straight beatings by Ajax, AC Milan and Barcelona, the latter pair being heavy defeats.

Hoops fans are, therefore, somewhat starved of success on the European front and desperately hoping for some good news from the two games against Hapoel that would mean the big midweek nights returning to Celtic Park through the autumn.

After a highly uncertain start with an opening loss to Gibraltar minnows Lincoln Red Imps, the Scottish champions have begun to click for manager Brendan Rodgers who has been juggling commitments in the Champions League, domestic competitions and a series of high-profile friendly matches including a couple of trips to Ireland.

The latest of those took place on Saturday when Celtic lost 2-0 to Inter Milan in Limerick, although it was very much a second-string side fielded by Rodgers against a strong line-up from the Italians.

While Rodgers will be pleased with the start his team have made in the Scottish Premiership and League Cup, he must be aware they have been riding their luck in Europe and only a very late Moussa Dembele penalty averted extra time in the previous round at home to an Astana side reduced to nine men.

Now they face Hapoel Be’er Sheva, who last season took the Israeli title away from Maccabi Tel Aviv to capture the crown for only the third time in their history and first since back-to-back successes in the mid-1970s.

They are certainly no mugs because, having beaten Moldovan team Sheriff in the second qualifying round, the club known as the Camels then drew 0-0 away to group-stage regulars Olympiakos before going through with a 1-0 home success.

Yet to concede a goal on the road in what is already their most successful European campaign in terms of the number of ties they have won, Hapoel look capable of thwarting Celtic and we would not be surprised if they then advanced against opponents with a poor recent record on their travels to the continent.
