Porto v Roma tips and betting advice - Dragons to make home advantage tell

Porto can make home advantage count in the first leg of their Champions League play-off round tie against Roma on Wednesday.

Our best bet for this match: Porto to win at 23/17 with Unibet

Neither of these clubs will be terribly happy with the draw they have received as they try to make it into the Champions League group stage, for the likes of Young Boys, Rostov, Ajax and even Borussia Monchengladbach would have been preferable opponents via the league route.

It means one very worthy inclusion among the last 32 will not be there, but at least there may well be a few different names in the round-robin phase this time around and it does no harm to freshen things up.

Try telling that to Porto and Roma though, and we think the Italian club may be set for disappointment and a drop into the Europa League.

The bookmakers are quoting Roma as slight favourites to qualify, but their competitive juices may not be flowing quite as well yet as those of Porto who began their domestic campaign last Friday with a 3-1 victory away to Rio Ave.

Nuno Espirito Santo, who made way at Valencia last season for Gary Neville’s short and ill-fated reign, has taken over as the Dragons’ coach this summer and while he did not set the world alight in Spain, his record in Portugal with Rio Ave was very good.

Renowned for being a very shrewd club in the transfer market, Porto have this summer signed Inter Milan full-back Alex Telles, Gent striker Laurent Depoitre and Liverpool midfielder Joao Teixeira among others while selling defender Maicon to Sao Paulo in his native Brazil.

Before last week’s opening league victory, they had enjoyed strong pre-season results with young striker Andre Silva in excellent form and Porto will be confident of pushing Benfica and Sporting Lisbon hard for the Portuguese Super Liga title.

Roma have been very active in the transfer market with their new arrivals, either permanently or on loan, including defenders Thomas Vermaelen, Juan Jesus and Federico Fazio, while Miralem Pjanic to Juventus was the most high-profile departure of those who had been on the books full time.

Although the Italian capital club have been in excellent pre-season form, especially ex-Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko who has scored seven goals in five games, they could find life tougher against a cherry-ripe Porto side that are always tough to beat at the Estadio do Dragao in European competition.
