Roma v Barcelona betting tips - Lionel Messi and co to start with easy win

The Champions League is back this week and defending Champions Barcelona begin with a tough trip to AS Roma, with Lionel Messi and co likely to show their class once again.

We all know about the class of this Barcelona team. With Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar as their unstoppable front three, there's even talk they could become the greatest club side of all time.

Last season's Champions League performances certainly highlighted how strong they could be. A class above for much of the tournament, they were eventually too good for a very good Juventus side in the final.

Their quest to win back to back European titles begins on Wednesday night with a trip to Roma. Far from an easy fixture to start with, Barcelona go in as the 4/6 favourites with Betfred and this is about right.

Should the Spanish Champions play to anywhere near their best, they'll be too much for a Roma side that has enjoyed being back in the Champions League, even if they haven't performed as well as they'd like.

In last season's competition, they won just one game in the group stages and everyone will remember their 7-1 hammering at home to Bayern Munich. It was a 2-0 reverse to Manchester City that sealed their fate too - so there's lots to improve on.

We doubt these improvements - in terms of results - will start on Wednesday night. The attacking threat of Barcelona - who are 17/10 to win with a one goal handicap at Paddy Power - is likely to be too much for the Italians.

As for who will get the Barcelona goal - take your pick!

The obvious one is, of course - Messi. Fresh from coming off the bench to score against Atletico Madrid, the Little Master is 4/1 (Ladbrokes) to light up this competition from the word go with two goals or more.

We've then noticed a pattern with Barcelona's Champions League away games under Luis Enrique. They tend to score early very often. In fact, they have scored inside 20 minutes in their last four European matches on the road.

For this to happen on Wednesday, you can get 16/5 with William Hill.

Overall, we expect this match to be a reminder to everyone just how good this Barcelona team are and how seriously they will take defending their Champions League crown.

Recommended bets:
Barcelona -1 @ 17/10 with Paddy Power
Messi to score twice or more @ 4/1 with Ladbrokes
Barcelona first goal to be between 0-15 minutes @ 16/5 with William Hill
