Rostov v Ajax tips and betting advice - Champions League place on a knife-edge

Rostov’s draw in Amsterdam last week came as no surprise to us and they are now slight favourites to reach the Champions League group stage at the expense of Ajax.

Our best bet for this match: Both teams to score at Evens with BetStars

The Russian club’s only previous continental experience apart from the Intertoto Cup was when they contested the Europa League play-off round two years ago but lost to Trabzonspor.

But now, after nearly ‘doing a Leicester’ last season when they pushed CSKA Moscow all the way in the Russian Premier League title race to finish second having narrowly avoided relegation in the previous campaign, they could be about to mix it with the cream of the continental teams.

A 1-1 draw away to Ajax has put Rostov in the box seat and it rewarded our decision to back them in the Double Chance market for that game at odds of 11/10, although a speculative bet on them to win at 9/2 was thwarted.

Ecuador midfielder Christian Noboa put Rostov ahead in the 13th minute from a free-kick but the much under-rated Davy Klaassen – why is he rarely linked with a big transfer? – equalised from the penalty spot.

The away goal for caretaker manager Dmitri Kirichenko’s side could prove to be priceless, but they ought to be aware that Ajax have already overcome a similarly unpromising position to make progress in the Champions League qualifiers.

That was in the previous round against PAOK Salonika when Peter Bosz’s side also drew 1-1 at home but won 2-1 in Greece and their away form has been significantly better so far this term than their results at the Amsterdam ArenA.

For example, in the Dutch Eredivisie, Ajax have drawn and lost respectively at home against Roda JC Kerkrade and Willem II, whereas besides the victory in Thessaloniki they have also triumphed 3-1 away to Sparta Rotterdam.

And as far as our main bet for this match is concerned, both teams have scored in all six of Ajax’s matches this term. While the ratio is not as high for Rostov, at Evens it is still a wager we are very happy to get stuck into.

In terms of who will advance from this tie to the Champions League rather than Europa League group stage, it looks very close to call. The fact we fancy Ajax to score could tilt it their way, but the To Qualify market is one we are happy to leave alone.
